Queen of Heaven: Mary’s Battle for Souls

    Description

She is history’s most famous woman. Those who come to her at their hour of need are welcomed with a mother’s love, compassion and care. She is gentleness itself to all who turn to her, save one: To Lucifer, the devil, she is an implacable foe.

Queen of Heaven is the story the battle between the angel who said “no” to God, and the woman who said “yes.” It is a battle that has flared through history to the current day.

Queen of Heaven is an encounter with Mary as you have never had before. Accompany Mary from her Immaculate Conception through her Assumption and beyond. Join her as she defends Christendom at Lepanto, frees a captive people at Guadalupe and heals a broken nation at Lourdes. Listen to her at Fatima as she predicts the rise of Communism—and watch as she defeats it through her beloved Pope.

Above all, discover why, though the battle continues, victory is assured to all who turn to the Queen of Heaven.

      The Next Queen of Heaven

Gregory Maguire, Harper, $14.99 paper (304p) ISBN 978-0-06-199779-2

Maguire, who made a name for himself with bestselling fantasy books like Wicked, delivers a sharp, funny, and provocative dual coming-of-age story set in 1999 upstate New York, focusing on obnoxious 17-year-old Tabitha Scales, and Jeremy Carr, a musician and director of the local Catholic church choir. Tabitha becomes the caretaker of her devoutly Protestant mother, Leontina, after she takes a nasty bump on the head and transforms into a foul-mouthed, helpless stranger. Jeremy, meanwhile, hopes an upcoming music gig in New York City will give him what it takes to leave Thebes—and former flame Willem Handelaers, now happily married with children—in the past. Jeremy's longing for Willem is heartbreakingly conveyed, as is Tabitha's rushed maturity and yearning for a man she later learns is engaged to a woman in Jeremy's choir. In conversations and their inner lives, Maguire's characters philosophize about faith, religion, acceptance, and desire in a way that never feels forced or preachy, and though cutesy at times, Maguire's humor buoys the darker story lines and keeps this winning sto the next queen of heaven

The Next Queen of Heaven by Gregory Maguire

Every time I obtain a few chapters deep in a Gregory Maguire book I have the same thought, "What the heck did I receive myself into?" But by the time I'm rounding the midway point of the story, I realize I've made yet another premature judgment. I think an explanation of my teetering perspectives lie with the writing approach of the author. The message tends to be a pinch of cryptic, a dash of dark with a splash of cynical. Although I enter each book with hesitation, I'm never disappointed with the ride.

The party mix of characters were as charming as they were oddly paired. A gay singing trio with a group of elder nuns? Neighboring Pentecostals with Catholics?

As with all groups of people with differences, you had the common stereotypical judgments, though these characters seemed to mesh despite themselves. Whether intentional or not, the showcase of camaraderie between these rare couplings strengthened my faith in brotherly adore. We don't have to notice eye to eye to amble side by side.

My single peeve with this book was the ending. I was thirty pages from the back cover and I struggled to figure out how it could possibly wrap up. The last

Years in the making, this new collection contains many as-yet-unseen pieces from Tom Hirons. Consisting of seventeen poems and an extensive introduction, this is the first significant and intentional collection from Tom since Falconer’s Joy in 2018 and marks a significant way-stone in the poetic territory of his writing. This new edition is litho-printed and with completely re-set text.

On 12th July, we held an online launch, in which Tom read from the collection and talked about its scope and the journey of it. If you'd like to watch the video of that launch, you can watch it on this site here.

Note: The Queen of Heaven is also available as part of the Poetry Bundle, which also includes Sometimes a Wild God, Falconer’s Joy and At the Orphans’ Door, at a base saving of over 10% (and also priced on a sliding scale.)

Also, The Queen of Heaven is available as a downloadable e-book in pdf form - you can find that here.

See the Details and Contents tabs for the book’s specification and contents.

      From Tom’s Foreword:

Not long after Falconer’s Joy came out in 2018, I was asked a reasonable and seemingly-simple question: Who are you writ
