Giovanni (GO)
Giovanni (Japanese: サカキSakaki) is the head of Team GO Rocket in Pokémon GO, based on the character of the matching name in the core series.
Giovanni can only be create if the player currently has a Super Rocket Radar equipped. When activated, the Super Rocket Radar will reveal all the nearby PokéStops where Giovanni's headquarters can potentially be located. However, there is a high chance that the PokéStop uncovered will be occupied by a Decoy Grunt disguised as Giovanni instead. Additionally, equipping the Super Rocket Radar guarantees that the concrete Giovanni will appear in the next Team GO Rocket balloon. If the real Giovanni is located, he will challenge the player to battle. Defeating the real Giovanni consumes the Super Rocket Radar.
From May 27 to May 28, 2023, Giovanni began appearing at Gyms, taking them over in five-star Shadow Raids using Shadow Mewtwo. Defeating him allowed players to capture Shadow Mewtwo in the bonus challenge, with a possibility of it being Shiny.

Here is everything you need to know about the latest Team Rocket Takeover event in Pokémon GO.

Team GO Rocket Leaders—Arlo, Cliff, and Sierra—are powerful Trainers you can encounter by crafting a Rocket Radar to locate their Hideouts. Defeating Team GO Rocket Leaders gives you a chance to encounter rare Shadow Pokémon and complete Special Research to fight Team GO Rocket’s boss Giovanni.
Note: This feature is only available to Trainers who are Level 8 and above.
Finding Team GO Rocket Leaders
Each time you Battle and defeat a Team GO Rocket Grunt, they’ll drop a Mysterious Component. Collect 6 Mysterious Components to craft a Rocket Radar:
Note that that if you have a Rocket Radar in your Item Bag or your Item Bag is full, you won't be able to collect Mysterious Components after defeating Team GO Rocket Grunts.
You can track your progress towards completing a Rocket Radar by checking how many Mysterious Components are in your Bag. After earning your first Rocket Radar, Rocket Radars will be available for purchase from the in-game Shop using PokéCoins.
The Rocket Radar reveals the locations of nearby Leader Hideouts. Leader Hideouts look just like regular PokéStops until you’re in range, at which point you
Pokémon Go Giovanni counters, team line-up in September 2025
Giovanni’s team had a refresh in Pokémon Go following the arrival of the summer 2025 “Delightful Days: Taken Over” event.
As it stands in September 2025, following an update rolled out on Aug. 11, Giovanni’s team sees several possibilities, including a finale against Giratina, the latest legendary to see the Shadow treatment.
For those who want to catch Shadow Giratina, try to get it done sooner rather than later, as there will likely be another Team Rocket refresh in coming months that’ll swap out the legendary for a new one.
However, know that whenever you face Giovanni, he’s a tough opponent to battle, and this page will list out his current team and counters if you’re having trouble.
How to find Giovanni in Pokémon Go
Team Go Rocket boss Giovanni is typically only available to battle while completing Team Go Rocket Special Research. We get a new set of this type of research every few months, typically with a new Shadow legendary Pokémon as a reward at the very end.
From mid-August 2025, this quest is "Delightful Days: Taken Over."
