To build our lives more comfortable, harmless, and secure, various next-generation technologies are required. For example, due to the limits of semiconductor miniaturization technology and the multiply in power consumption, computers that replace traditional supercomputers are needed. Additionally, encryption communication technology that cannot be eavesdropped on is necessary for information security, and high-precision and high-sensitivity sensing technology is required for the exploration of life sciences and modern materials. To meet these demands, technologies utilizing quantum effects, such as quantum computing, quantum encryption communication technology, and quantum sensing, are expected. However, the maturation of stable and reliable operators (quantum bits) and quantum sensors is essential for the realization of these technologies. We deeds research on forming crystal defects that can be applied as quantum bits or sensors by selecting wide bandgap semiconductors such as diamond and silicon carbide (SiC) as the mother material and utilizing ions and electron b

Patient characteristics of follicular lymphoma and adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma in Korea

GENERAL REPORT

1. Host Institute: Seoul National University Hospital

Seoul National University Hospital is located in the center of Seoul city, next to Changdeokgung Palace. It consists of Main hospital, Children’s hospital and Cancer hospital. It is one of the largest hospitals in Seoul, having 1307 employed doctors and holding 1782 beds including ICU and NICU, as of November 31, 2014. Its origin goes back to April 14, 1885 when Jejungwon was established as the first modern public hospital of western medicine in Korea. Its history also includes strong reflection of Japanese government in early-20th century. After the annexation of Korea by Japan in 1910, all fields constituting hospitals and medical educa

When did you decide to become an academic researcher?

I first dreamed of becoming a researcher when I was in elementary school. I was probably 10 years old. Though at the time, I was not interested in chemistry, but in astronomy. I was an elementary school student when Dr. Mamoru Mohri, the first astronaut from Japan went into space on the space shuttle. That is when I got interested in rockets and the universe. It was also around the time when I saw a beautiful and very bright comet Hyakutake, discovered by Mr. Yuji Hyakutake. So I dream of becoming an astronomer. I was also interested in history as a boy. I wanted to conduct archeological work on the pyramids of Egypt. TV shows often featured Professor Sakuji Yoshimura's archaeological team investigating the pyramids. All the same, my dream was to become a researcher.

When I entered junior high school, I visited the geology and astronomy club at the school. Unfortunately, the atmosphere was not a good match for me. Then, my classmate who was seated next to me in class invited me to join the chemistry research club. I never imagined then of course that I would become a professional chemist, although I like
