Next full moon maine

When is the September 2025 full moon? When to see the corn moon.

Earlier this summer, "corn sweat" made news due to the crushing humidity in the central U.S. Now, it's time for the "corn moon" to make an appearance in the late-summer skies above the U.S.

And for folks in other parts of the world, this weekend's full moon will also be a "blood" moon thanks to a total lunar eclipse, which unfortunately won't be visible here in the states.

Americans will have to wait until next March to see the next blood moon lunar eclipse.

When is the corn moon?

The final full moon of summer 2025 – known this year as the corn moon – will reach peak illumination at 2:09 p.m. EDT on Sunday, Sept. 7, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

It will be below the horizon at that moment, so we'll have to wait until evening to watch the moon rise in the eastern sky.

The moon will also appear plenty full both nights before and after Sept. 7.

Why is it called the corn moon?

The Algonquin tribes in what is now the northeastern USA coined the term corn moon, according to the Maine Farmer's Almanac, since this was the time for gathering their main staple crops of corn, pumpkins, squash, beans and wi

Meteor Shower Calendar 2025-2026

A meteor shower is a celestial event in which a number of meteors are observed to radiate, or originate, from one point in the night sky called Radiant. These meteors are caused by streams of cosmic debris called meteoroids entering Earth's atmosphere at extremely high speeds on parallel trajectories. The Meteor Data Center of the IAU lists over 900 suspected meteor showers of which about 100 are well established.

The meteor showers listed below are the easiest to observe and provide the most activity. Particular attention should be noted to the time and moonlight conditions. All these showers are best seen after midnight. Some are not even visible until after midnight. Showers that peak with the moon’s phase greater than one half illuminated (first quarter to last quarter) will be affected by moonlight and difficult to observe.

While the time each shower is best seen remains much the same year after year, the moonlight conditions change considerably from one year to the next. As we approach the date of each shower's maximum, be sure to consult the latest AMS article about Meteor Showers, which will provide in depth information on each shower

September's 'Corn Moon' rises this week

Our next full moon, and the final one of the astronomical summer, is set to rise above the horizon this week on Sunday, Sept. 7.

What You Need To Know

  • September's full moon will rise this weekend

  • It is called the 'Corn Moon' this year

  • Unobstructed views of the horizon allow for best sightings

This full moon is called the Corn Moon as opposed to the Harvest Moon which traditionally is the full moon that falls closest to the autumnal equinox (Sept. 22). It just so happens that the next full moon will occur on Oct, 6 so it gets the name Harvest Moon this year.

The moon will officially be full at 2:09 p.m. EDT Sunday, so it won't be seen until hours later when it rises above the horizon after sunset.

This year's Corn Moon will actually coincide with a lunar eclipse for much of the Northern Hemisphere (Europe, Africa, and Australia), but no eclipse will be visible across the U.S. Other countries can expect a long-lasting "blood moon" similar to what America saw back in March earlier this year.
