Mick Herron, “Slow Horses” and “The Secret Hours”.

Mick Herron discusses his latest novel, “The Secret Hours,” now out in trade paperback, and the Slough House series of of spy novels and stories with host Richard Wolinsky.

Mick Herron has written eight books in the Slough House series of novels about a tiny corner of MI5 for rejects and misfits, people who have screwed up but not been fired. They are known collectively as “Slow Horses,” which is the title of the television series starring Gary Oldman as their boss, Jackson Lamb. A new season of “Slow Horses” began this week on Apple+.

“The Secret Hours” is located in the same world as the series, but serves as a stand-alone novel about an inquiry into MI5’s past, set up by a conservative government out to rein in the Secret Service.

In the interview, Mick Herron discusses the origins of the book and of the Slough House series, as well as his career as a writer,

Martin Cruz Smith, author of GORKY PARK

A deft knockout of a story, with an arc of history, written with humour and style. Mick Herron is one of the best writers of spy fiction working today

Paula Hawkins, author of THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN

I doubt I'll read a more enjoyable novel all year. The Secret Hours has it all: thrilling action scenes, crackling dialogue, characters to infuriate and beguile, and a neatly intricate plot. And through it all cuts Herron's acerbic wit, its effect heightened by the glimpses he allows us, from time to time, from his world to ours

Lee Child, author of the Jack Reacher novels

Great Britain has a long, rich history of how-it-really-works espionage fiction, and Mick Herron - stealthy as a secret agent - has written himself to the very top of the list. If you haven't already been recruited, start with The Secret Hours - all Herron's trademark strengths are here: tension, intrigue, observation, humour, absurdity . . . and pitch-perfect prose

Michael Connelly, author of DESERT STAR

The Secret Hours is wonderful. It's Mick Herron at his best, taking us into a dark

The List, a Slough House/Slow Horses novella, by Mick Herron – book review

According to the publisher, there are eight novels in the Slow Horses series, but there are several other novels and novellas set in the Slough House world. They are written by Mick Herron, contain characters such as Jackson Lamb and River Cartwright, and so we are going to consider them canon. People get really hung up about canon so what I mean in practical terms is that I am going to try to read them in order, inserting them as appropriate into the main eight books. (There is a prequel, Reconstruction, but I didn’t know about it at the time so will come back to it later.) The List was written in 2015, between Dead Lions (novel 2) and Real Tigers (novel 3). (There’s a further standalone novel, Nobody Walks, which comes immediately after The List. Keeping up?)

The List is a quick and enjoyable read which clocks in at 96 not-very-closely-typeset pages. It covers the tale of dead asset Dieter Hess and the discovery by Diana Taverner that he’s been receiving mystery money. His handler, John Bachelor, has to scramble to find out what is going on before Taverner casts him out of

Old Ghosts and New Threats

Crime Fiction Lover

With a loud trump and a pithy put-down, Jackson Lamb and his motley bunch of MI5 failures return to Apple TV+ from 4 Sept 2024, for the fourth season of Slow Horses, based on the award-winning novels of Mick Herron.

The latest outing takes its cue from book four in the series, Spook Street, and sees Lamb (brilliantly played by Gary Oldman) and his team dealing with the aftermath of a bombing in the heart of London. Meanwhile, the much put-upon River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) has even more on his plate than usual as his grandfather (Jonathan Pryce) – a former spook himself – begins to show signs of dementia.

The OB, as his grandson calls him, was once a big cheese in the intelligence service, and his mental decline is ringing alarm bells at Regent’s Park, and with Jackson Lamb too at Slough House. Lamb is well aware that there is more to David Cartwright than meets the eye.

The aftermath of last season’s shootout has repercussions in this new series. There’s been a shakeup at the Park and with former Head of the Dogs Duffy out of the picture, it’s time for Emma Flyte (Ruth Bradley) to take the reins – or should that be the le
